Looking back on my experience with the writing component of the engineering course, I feel obligated to evaluate my areas of strength and growth. I have completed a variety of writing assignments this semester that have improved both my comprehension of engineering principles and my capacity to convey technical knowledge clearly. The purpose of this self-evaluation is to examine how my writing has improved, with a particular emphasis on important areas like organization, technical clarity, following instructions, and incorporating feedback.

One of the core competencies I have honed is my ability to communicate technical ideas succinctly and precisely. Technical writing is a precision-driven field in engineering, and this course has helped me become a better technical writer. I now know how to keep technical content precise and informative while avoiding needless jargon. I now understand how crucial it is to write with clarity and complexity in mind, addressing the needs of the reader, be they a professor, a peer, or a professional in the field.

Following instructions has always been an aim I’ve had for my writing. It has been essential to stick to the restrictions of every project, including formatting specifications, word counts, and citation formats, in order to show attention to detail. For example, in the lab report we were asked to submit, the professor gave us a website that shows us specifically how the order of the report should be and what it includes. It was a must to follow this specific order: abstract, materials and methods, results, discussion, and conclusion. I understand that in engineering, accuracy encompasses the whole paper in addition to the technical information. Following the rules has helped me not only meet the requirements of the course but also equipped me to handle the demanding standards that I might run into in professional engineering situations.

My writing growing process has been significantly aided by the incorporation of feedback. The helpful criticism from classmates and the professor has been quite helpful in pinpointing areas that still need improvement. I’ve welcomed criticism as a chance to grow, seeing it as a guide for improvement rather than a critical assessment. In the technical description rough draft, after submitting the assignment, the professor sent me the same document back but with extra notes on the side to point out what went wrong. For example, she made it clear that I shouldn’t forget to make it clear if the components of my ps5 are listed from front or back, or right or left. I now regularly revise my writing work in between drafts, which helps me to fix errors, make sense of unclear passages, and bolster my points. Throughout the semester, this iterative process has made a substantial contribution to my writing abilities’ development.

One area in which I have constantly succeeded is timely submission. Since meeting deadlines is crucial in both professional and academic contexts, I’ve made efficient time management a top priority. On top of showing my dedication to the course, timely submissions allow me to make extensive edits that guarantee the caliber of my work.

I notice an importance for formality and precision as I evaluate the language and tone I use in my work. Writing in engineering requires a formality level consistent with the field’s professional standards. I’ve tried to speak in a tone that is authoritative and courteous, understanding how crucial it is to project confidence in the knowledge being shared. I tried my best to apply this idea in the engineering proposal I did with my group members. First, I thought about it being the final major assignment of the semester. Second, I wanted to shoe my professor and my group members my writing skills and how formal I can be when I become an engineer in the future hopefully. Word choice has been very important to me because I try to utilize precise and suitable terminology for the circumstance.

This introduction to a variety of genres, such as technical description and lab reports, has come from completing different writing assignments. Priority has been given to including every genre component that is necessary because every kind of document has a distinct function in the engineering setting. I’ve learnt to adjust my writing to the requirements of each genre, from abstracts to conclusions, to make sure the work serves the purpose it was meant to.

In terms of citations, I have maintained a meticulous approach. Proper citation is not only an academic requirement but also a demonstration of intellectual honesty and respect for the work of others. I used citations in several assignments such as the technical description where I stated the source of where I got my information on the ps5 controller and the engineering proposal where I showed the professor and my group members where I found ideas of solar powered streetlights. I have adhered to citation styles specified in the course guidelines, acknowledging the importance of giving credit to sources that contribute to the foundation of my work.

Even though I am happy with my development, I know I can always do better. I want to keep improving my writing going future, especially in the areas where I see room for improvement. I’m excited to use the knowledge I’ve gained from this self-evaluation as a basis for my future engineering efforts.
